Fifty Years Beneath the Surface: Dive BVI
There’s something particularly inviting about the BVI’s blue waters. It begins with the waves, each one rolling onto the shore whispering a welcome. Then comes the sun, creating a sparkle that visitors get lost in for hours. Boats, kayaks, and paddleboards all promise to scratch the itch, but one up-close look through the island’s crystal-clear waters, and you’ll know the true relief you’re searching for requires you to dive in.
For more than 50 years, Dive BVI has helped the island’s visitors do just that. Offering everything from lessons to private charters, with a dive shop that supports it all, the team makes accepting the invitation to explore a no-brainer.
To get a closer look at life beneath the surface, we sat down with COO, Jeff McNutt. With over 3,000 dives under his belt, there’s no one better to take you on the journey. So, buckle up; your first inside look at the BVI’s underwater world starts here.
Q: Why diving? How did you fall in love with the world underwater?
A: I think it’s the sense of discovery. The moment you drop below the surface, everything changes; the noise disappears, life slows down, and you’re suddenly a visitor in this completely different world.
I was hooked pretty quickly. I started diving in college as a PE credit and have been doing it ever since! Over the years, diving became much more than a hobby; it became a career, a community, and a way to introduce people to a part of the planet they might otherwise never experience.
Q: Why the BVI? What makes these islands such an incredible diving destination?
A: The BVI really is a special place to dive. We have clear water, beautiful reefs, dramatic underwater topography, wrecks, and an incredible variety of marine life. Plus, many of our best sites are just a short boat ride away. What I especially love is the variety. You can explore a historic wreck in the morning and spend the afternoon drifting over a colorful reef filled with turtles and tropical fish. And, of course, the scenery above water isn’t too bad either!

Q: How long has Dive BVI been operating in the BVI?
A: Dive BVI has been part of the British Virgin Islands since 1975, so we’ve been introducing guests to these waters for more than 50 years. That history means a lot to us. We know these islands and dive sites incredibly well, but we’re also always looking at how we can improve the experience, our training, our equipment, and the way we care for the environment.
Q: Roughly how many dives have you completed?
A: 3,129 and counting. At a certain point, some instructors stop counting. Not me; I love to nerd out about diving and all the cool things I get to experience.
Between recreational diving, teaching, training instructors, working with our teams, and simply getting underwater whenever I can, I’ve been fortunate to spend a significant part of my life beneath the surface.
The funny thing is, even after all those dives, there’s still something new to see.
Q: Tell us a bit about your Scrub Island-based Dive BVI team. Who will we meet there?
A: Our Dive BVI team at Scrub Island is a great mix of experienced dive professionals and retail staff who genuinely love what they do. They’re instructors, captains, guides, naturalists, and problem-solvers. These are the people I know can turn a guest’s vacation into something they’ll remember for years. What matters most to me is that they combine professionalism and safety with personality. We want you to feel like you’re heading out on the water with people you trust and enjoy being around.
Q: Do I need diving experience or certification to dive with Dive BVI?
A: It depends on the dive, but there are opportunities for all skill levels. If you’re already certified, we’ll match the experience to your certification and comfort level. If you’ve never dived before, that doesn’t mean you have to sit on the boat! We offer introductory courses where you can learn the basics in a controlled, comfortable environment.
Safety always comes first, and we ensure everyone feels confident before taking the first plunge.

Q: Can I get scuba certified while on vacation in the BVI?
A: Absolutely. The BVI is a pretty spectacular classroom! Depending on how much time you have, we can take you from your first breaths underwater through a full certification course. If you can complete some of the academic work before arriving, even better; that means more of your vacation can be spent actually diving.
Q: Does Dive BVI offer more than scuba diving?
A: Yes! Diving may be in our name, but the ocean is our playground. We offer snorkeling, a variety of private boat charters, island tours, and day trip experiences. You don’t have to be a diver to get out on the water with us.
Q: On a typical dive in the BVI, what are you most likely to see and experience?
A: Expect colorful reef fish, corals, sponges, rays, turtles, lobsters, and plenty of smaller creatures hiding in the reef if you know where to look. Depending on the site and the day, you may encounter sharks, tarpon, barracuda, or schools of fish moving through.
Every dive is different, and that unpredictability is part of the fun. Sometimes the most memorable encounter is something completely unexpected.

Q: What’s your favorite dive site in the BVI and why?
A: It’s hard to choose just one, but the RMS Rhone is high on the list. It’s an extraordinary wreck with an incredible history, and over time it has become part of the reef itself. You’re not simply diving a shipwreck; you’re exploring history surrounded by marine life. I’ve dived it many times, and every trip holds a unique experience.
Q: Where would we find you when you’re on land?
A: Usually somewhere around boats, dive gear, our shops, or talking with the team, which means I’m technically on land but probably still thinking about the water! When I do switch off, I enjoy everything that makes island life island life: good people, good food, being outside, and appreciating where we’re fortunate enough to live and work.

Q: Can you share a random fact about diving you think we wouldn’t know?
A: One of my favorites is that sound behaves very differently underwater. It travels roughly four times faster through water than through air. This makes it difficult for our brains to decipher exactly where a sound is coming from. You might hear a boat and swear it’s in one direction, only to discover it’s somewhere completely different. It’s one of those little reminders that underwater, the rules you’re used to don’t always apply.
Q: If underwater creatures could talk, which species would have the most to say?
A: Octopus, without question. They’re incredibly intelligent, curious, and always seem to be watching and assessing you. I suspect they know far more about what’s going on down there than they’re letting on. Although if Caribbean reef fish could talk, I imagine we’d hear quite a bit of gossip about all the divers who visit their neighborhood!
Q: Any advice for those considering an adventure with Dive BVI?
A: Come curious, and don’t worry about being an expert. Whether you’ve logged hundreds of dives, haven’t been underwater in ten years, or have never put on a mask before, we’re here to help. Tell us what you’re comfortable with and what you’d love to experience, and we’ll create the right adventure for you.
Also, give yourself permission to slow down. The BVI is best experienced that way. Look around, take it in, and enjoy being here. We’ll take care of the rest.

All year long, the island’s waters extend their invitation. Their glistening waves smirk at visitors, daring them to discover the stories held underneath. We watch it happen from the shore. As guests take the first plunge, these irresistible waters open up, giving life on land the smallest of peeks into its secrets. From the shore, we will never fully know what happens underneath, but when these daring divers return, they seem to shine a little brighter.
Dive BVI is dedicated to making that light possible for every curious explorer. Backed by 50 years of experience and a dedicated dive shop within Scrub Island’s Marina Village, your adventure is in the hands of true experts. So, whether it’s 3,129 or just one, McNutt and his team of professionals are here to help you dive into our depths. Book your first dive at https://www.scrubisland.com/experiences/dive-bvi.
