BVI’s Marina Cay Bar & Grill Adds Watersports

MARINA CAY, British Virgin Islands (March 5, 2024) – Marina Cay, the eight-acre private island just offshore from Beef Island, Tortola, and home to the newly opened Marina Cay Bar & Grill is introducing an array of watersport activities through a partnership with Up ‘n’ Under Watersports. From thrilling eFoil and aquaDART rentals to slower-paced kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel equipment, visitors will be able to explore above or below the water at their own speed. Commonly described as “electric surfboards,” eFoils are electric-powered hydrofoil boards that allow riders to soar above the waves at up to 20 mph, while the aquaDART is the world’s fastest and most powerful dive scooter, allowing users to cover miles of underwater territory above or beneath the water. Equipment is available for hourly or full-day rentals for groups and individuals, and lessons are available for eFoiling. eFoils are currently available, with the remainder of the watersport activities launching in the near future.

Closed since Hurricane Irma in 2017, the legendary Marina Cay has been brought back to life by neighboring Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, which now manages the island filled with rich history. Marina Cay is available via the complimentary Scrub Island ferry, which departs from both Trellis Bay and the resort. Locals and island-hoppers traveling by boat may also use the BoatyBall app to reserve one of 29 mooring balls.

“The addition of watersports gives visitors lots of ways to enjoy our mini destination longer than just for a delicious meal or refreshing drink,” said General Manager Sandra Grisham-Clothier. “Marina Cay’s ideal location and picturesque setting are perfect for guests who want to extend their time on the island with a day of fun water play.”

Watersport activities are available Sunday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Marina Cay Bar & Grill is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., serving lunch and dinner. Guests wishing to relax after their water adventure or meal are invited to find the perfect hangout spot at any number of hammocks, colorful Adirondack chairs, and beach palapas. Happy hour, live music, beach parties and other experiences are listed on the events page of Marina Cay’s website. Showers are available to boaters on-island, and neighboring Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina offers fuel service, ice, trash disposal and other provisions from its fully stocked market at Scrub Island Outpost.

Marina Cay’s intriguing history dates to the late 1930s when it was home to newlyweds Robb and Rodie White. His best-selling book of 1953, Our Virgin Island, chronicled their life on Marina Cay and was later adapted for a film starring Sidney Poitier and John Cassavetes, which was partially shot on location. In 1956, the island was purchased by New York City native Eugene “Gene” Tonkonogy, and later a small resort charmed decades of travelers from around the globe. In the 1990s, Charles Tobias established a Pusser’s Restaurant at Marina Cay which became a popular gathering spot until Hurricane Irma forced its closure in 2017. Today, the island is leased by Scrub Island Development Group, which plans on introducing additional activations, including weddings and other public and private events.
